According to the ancient Greek myth, when Cronus conquered his father’s Uranus kingdom, he proceed in cutting his genitals and throwing them in the sea. From the foams, goddess Aphrodite was born and emerged, according to the most prevalent tradition, on the shores of Cyprus. The painting represents the goddess emerging from the water standing on shell navigated by air blown by Zephyrus and Aura towards the shores of Cyprus or Kythira.
On the shore the goddess is welcomed by the deity of the seasons “Ora” (hour) who offers her a mantle. According to some interpreters, naked goddess is a symbol of spiritual and not earthly Love.
